68 projects, Fasanenstraße 68, D-10719 Berlin
For the second exhibition in its new artist space, 68projects presents an international, eclectic lineup of artists and a vibrant exhibition of works on paper.
A blank sheet of paper, four white walls, an empty black box theater, You can do anything you want...Nothingis more daunting for an artist than the simple act of sitting down to begin. Even getting ready to start can establish enduring, eccentric rituals.
When an artist finishes the windup, what awaits is not infinite, exhilarating possibilities but the low-grade anxiety that all that has been done is all that is needed. If seeing Velazques's Las Meninas has prompted painters to give up painting on the spot, then what motivates an artist today to attempt making a work considered worthy enough to sit alongside one of the greatest artworks of all time? The simple answer is trying counts. And, new ideas can come to matter. And so, you never know.
"Person, Place or Thing" is an exhibition of works on paper by emerging and established artists selected by Quang Bao, the new artistic director for 68projects in Berlin. Using paper as the basis for the group exhibition allows for a diverse range of artworks and participating artists, tightened by asking each artist to make a work that falls into one of the three categories in a common guessing-game prompt. Most of the artworks are presented as finished works on paper though a few illustrate the artistic practices of sculptors, film/video makers and performance artists.
“I have always loved the intimacy, evident handiwork and reinvention contained on a single sheet of paper,” Bao said. “I wanted to celebrate the generative power of human imagination.
